What is Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)?
PBT is an innovative body-conditioning program designed to strengthen the muscle memory required to develop a strong, safe, and elite ballet technique.
Originally created by Marie Walton-Mahon in Australia to help students find their best alignment, PBT has become a global phenomenon used by professional companies and schools alike. By using stability balls and resistance training, PBT helps you understand how to use your body before you even step up to the barre.
Why is PBT different? While classical ballet focuses on the aesthetic and the repertoire, PBT focuses on the internal machinery of the dancer. It bridges the gap between mechanical strength and artistic expression.
What You Will Learn
In this 90-minute intensive with Margaret Kendrick, you will focus on:
- Core & Pelvic Stability: Learn to control your center to allow for greater freedom of movement in the limbs.
- Muscle Memory: "Upload" the correct alignment into your body so it becomes automatic during your regular dance classes.
- Injury Prevention: Learn how to maintain muscle tone and technique safely. As Master Teacher Beverley Bagg notes, "Young dancers having hip replacements at 14 years old is unconscionable." PBT teaches you to dance in a healthy, sustainable way.
- Proprioception: Heighten your awareness of weight placement and posture.
Is This Workshop For Me?
Yes! This workshop is open to all levels.
Whether you are a recreational dancer, a student, or a professional looking to fine-tune your instrument, PBT is the "gift" that supplements your training.
"Classical ballet has evolved... Choreographers are demanding strength and power. I think it’s really important that dancers become the 'super-elite athletes' that they are called. Classical ballet does not really prepare them for that enough. To have a conditioning program to supplement your classical ballet program is a gift."
— Beverley Bagg, Master Ballet Teacher & PBT Pioneer

Margaret is excited to bring this revolutionary conditioning system to the American Dance Institute. She believes that understanding the "why" and "how" of body mechanics is the key to longevity in dance.
Note: Because PBT often utilizes specific equipment (like exercise balls), Margaret requires a strict headcount four days in advance to prepare the studio for you.
